The rollout builds on recent policy changes that extended e gate eligibility to children aged eight and above, making family travel easier.
Shift toward passport free border control
UK airports have begun a major shift toward passport free border control, rolling out facial recognition powered contactless e gates that allow eligible travellers to enter the country without scanning a physical passport.
The nationwide upgrade, already live at East Midlands Airport, marks one of the most significant modernisations of the UK border in years, promising faster queues, smoother arrivals, and a fully digital identity verification process.
A new era of contactless border control
The Home Office confirmed that from 6 October 2026, UK airports began switching to a passport free e gate system that uses facial comparison technology to verify travellers.
As passengers approach the gate, a camera captures a live image and checks it against verified immigration, travel, and passport records. If the match is successful, the gate opens automatically, no passport scan required.
Testing shows the new system is up to 25% faster than traditional passport based e gates, reducing bottlenecks and improving flow at busy terminals.
Where the rollout has begun
East Midlands Airport became the first UK airport to deploy the new contactless gates, with the technology now entering a phased rollout across the country.
By early 2027, every UK airport equipped with e gates is expected to support passport free processing. This includes major hubs such as:
Heathrow
Gatwick
Manchester
Edinburgh
Glasgow
Birmingham
Bristol
Cardiff
London City
Luton
Newcastle
Stansted
Initially, the system is available only to British citizens, but the government plans to expand access to other nationalities already eligible for e gates, such as EU citizens, Americans, Canadians, and Australians.
How the technology works
The new system relies on facial recognition and automated identity verification:
Travellers approach the e gate.
A camera captures a live photo.
The system compares the image with pre verified travel and immigration data.
If verified, the gate opens automatically.
Airlines will supply passenger photo data in advance, taken from check in information, allowing Border Force to pre load identity galleries for arriving flights.
Security and safeguards
Despite the shift to contactless processing, border security checks remain unchanged. Travellers must still carry their physical passport, and may be asked to scan it if:
Additional verification is required
Their identity cannot be matched
They are selected for manual inspection
Border Force officers will continue to monitor all e gates and assist passengers as needed.
Improvements for families and frequent travellers
The rollout builds on recent policy changes that extended e gate eligibility to children aged eight and above, making family travel easier.
Airport leaders have welcomed the upgrade, calling it a major step toward faster, more efficient borders and a smoother passenger experience.
A step toward fully digital travel
The passport free e gates form part of the UK’s broader digital transformation of border control, alongside the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme and future biometric initiatives. Industry groups say the move positions UK airports at the forefront of global travel innovation.
