Portugal Suspends New EES Border Controls at Lisbon Airport After Severe Delays

Portugal has suspended the rollout of the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport for at least three months following major disruption to passenger processing.

The partial implementation of the system led to hours-long queues at passport control, with arriving travellers facing significant delays over several consecutive days.

Authorities acknowledged that existing resources and staffing levels were insufficient to manage the new procedures.

The temporary suspension will allow time for staff reinforcements, additional training, and adjustments to operational procedures if necessary.

The decision was ordered by the Portuguese government after consultations with border force officials.

During the suspension period, border checks at Lisbon Airport will revert to pre-EES procedures.

Officials confirmed that the halt currently applies only to Lisbon and does not affect other Portuguese airports.
