What’s changed at London Heathrow Airport
1. All passenger security checkpoints now use advanced CT scanners
Heathrow has completed the installation of next-generation computed tomography (CT) scanners at every terminal security lane the first major airport in the world to fully do so.
These machines create high-resolution 3D images of carry-on bags, improving threat detection and reducing the need for passengers to unpack.
2. Liquids and electronics can now stay in your bag
Passengers no longer have to remove liquids, gels, pastes, or electronic devices (like laptops and tablets) from carry-on luggage at security.
3. The old 100 ml liquid rule is scrapped
The longstanding 100 millilitre limit on liquids put in place in 2006 in response to a liquid explosives threat has been removed at Heathrow.
You can now carry liquid containers up to approximately 2 litres in your hand luggage.
4. No more plastic bags for liquids
The removal of the 100 ml rule also means passengers no longer need to use clear sealable plastic bags for their liquids at security. Heathrow estimates this will eliminate about 16 million single-use plastic bags per year.
5. Faster and easier security experience
The new technology reduces the need to prepare items before screening, helping passengers move through checkpoints more quickly and with less stress.
A few important notes
- These relaxed liquid and laptop rules apply only at Heathrow (and other UK airports where CT scanners are fully deployed). Not all airports worldwide have adopted them yet; in many places the 100 ml rules still apply. (The Times)
- Always check the security rules at your departure and destination airports, especially for international travel, because rules can differ outside the UK.
