Doncaster Airport Re-opening

Doncaster Sheffield Airport Reopening Secures Major Funding Boost

Plans to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) have taken a significant step forward after City of Doncaster councillors approved a £57 million loan to support initial costs. The decision follows months of negotiations aimed at restoring aviation services at the site, which closed in 2022.

The council estimates the full cost of reopening the airport at around £193 million. Despite the financial commitment, a recent report warned that the airport is likely to operate at a loss for its first nine years. Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said the borrowing was essential, adding: “Quite simply without taking out the borrowing the airport cannot proceed. I know that the airport can be a success and I know the council will give us their support.”

Under current plans, cargo operations are expected to resume in 2027, with commercial passenger flights returning by summer 2028.

The £57 million loan comes after South Yorkshire council leaders agreed to contribute nearly £160 million in public funding to help bring the airport back into operation. However, the combined funding still falls short of covering all projected reopening costs, leaving local leaders to explore additional financial options as the project moves ahead.
