Pets Classed as Luggage

The European Court of Justice has ruled that pets lost during air travel are legally treated like checked baggage, limiting compensation to the same amount as lost luggage—around €1,800.

The case stemmed from a Spanish woman whose dog went missing before a 2019 Iberia flight.

The court found that under the Montreal Convention, only human travelers count as passengers, meaning airlines are not liable for emotional damages when pets go missing unless owners declare a higher value or have extra insurance.
