Spain’s latest 2026 tourist taxes explained, updated rates for Catalonia, Balearic Islands, Galicia, Basque Country, Canary Islands | Post Up-dated 20-08-2026
1. Catalonia – highest rates in Spain
Catalonia updated its tax on 1 April 2026, nearly doubling previous rates. Barcelona also adds a municipal surcharge.
Barcelona (city): total per person/night
5★ hotels: €12.00
4★ hotels: €8.40
Tourist apartments (VUT): €9.50
Other accommodation: €7.00
Cruises: €8 – €10 depending on stay duration
Rest of Catalonia:
€0.80 – €4.50 depending on category; no municipal surcharge yet (but allowed from Oct 2026).

Charged for first 7 nights only
Under 17s exempt
2. Balearic Islands – ecotax (ITS)
Applies since 2016; unchanged in 2026.
High season (May – Oct):
€1 – €4 per night depending on accommodation (5★ highest) +10% VAT
Low season (Nov–Apr): 50% reduction
Long stays:
From 9th night onward: −50%
Under 16s exempt.
3. Galicia – new municipal taxes (2026)
Galicia expanded tourist taxes beyond Santiago.
A Coruña: €1.00 – €2.50 per night Santiago de Compostela: €1.00 – €2.50 per night Vigo (from Oct 2026): €0.80 – €2.00 per night
4. Basque Country – selective municipal taxes
San Sebastián and Bilbao apply local tourist taxes.
San Sebastián: €1 – €2.50 per night (in force since 2024)
5. Canary Islands – only local exceptions
The Canary Islands do not have a regional tourist tax. But Mogán (Gran Canaria) charges a small local ecotax:
€0.15 per person/day (can vary annually)
6. Valencian Community – pilot introduction (2026)
Your region (Valencia) has approved a tourist tax, but only pilot municipalities apply it in 2026.
€0.50 – €2.00 per night depending on accommodation
Expected in Valencia, Alicante, Benidorm first, then expansion possible
Where tourist taxes are NOT charged (2026)
These major destinations do not apply a general tourist tax:
Madrid
Andalusia (Málaga, Seville, Costa del Sol) – debate ongoing, no tax yet
Most of the Canary Islands (except Mogán)
Valencian Community (outside pilot cities)
Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Alicante (non pilot), Benalmádena, Costa del Sol
