Palma Prepares for 100 flights during eclipse blackout

Palma Airport is gearing up for one of its busiest and most unusual operational windows of the year, handling more than 100 flights in just two hours as Mallorca prepares for the rare total solar eclipse on Wednesday evening.

A Surge of 115 Flights in Two Hours

According to airport operator Aena, Palma Airport expects around 115 arrivals and departures between 19:00 and 21:00, a sharp spike linked directly to eclipse tourism and special aviation operations.

Commercial flights will continue as scheduled, but additional safety protocols will be in place during the brief period of darkness.

Air traffic controllers note that passengers may enjoy a unique aerial view of the eclipse, depending on their seat position.

Those unable to see it are advised to remain seated to avoid affecting aircraft balance.

Special Eclipse Flight & Scientific Mission

Iberia is operating a dedicated eclipse flight from Madrid to Palencia, designed specifically for skywatchers and researchers.

The Airbus A321XLR will carry scientists from the Shelios project and feature Starlink internet to broadcast real-time eclipse footage.

Extra Safety Measures for Pilots

The eclipse’s temporary darkness requires adjustments, especially for VFR (Visual Flight Rules) aircraft, which cannot operate at night:

Pilots must maintain visual contact with terrain and other aircraft

Navigation lights will be used throughout the event

Flights may be temporarily suspended if visibility drops below minimum thresholds

Restrictions will vary depending on each aerodrome’s regulations

Palma’s Air Traffic Already at Record Highs

This eclipse surge comes as Palma Airport is already experiencing a major rise in air traffic in 2026:

54,908 flights were managed in July alone — a 5.7% increase over 2025

224,632 flights were handled from January to July, up 4.1% year-on-year

Spain recorded its highest-ever monthly flight volume in July, with 257,909 operations nationwide

This growth is supported by Enaire’s Plan Verano 2026–2027, which includes more than 70 measures and the hiring of 79 new air traffic controllers.
