Three arrested over Stansted bomb threat

Essex Police have arrested three people after a bomb hoax disrupted operations at Stansted Airport.

An easyJet plane departing for Amsterdam was left on the tarmac and then moved to a secure area.

The runway was closed for nearly one hour.

Specialist officers boarded the plane, detaining two men, 18 and 22, and a woman, 18.

A full search was carried out but there was nothing ‘of concern on board.’

“Officers responded quickly and worked with our partners at Stansted to move the plane to a secure area to carry out enquiries,” Essex police said.

“Specialist officers boarded the plane and removed three people who have all been arrested on suspicion of making a bomb hoax and they are currently in custody.”

The incident caused six inbound flights to be diverted to other airports.

It follows an incident last week when a Jet2 flight from Turkey to Manchester was diverted to Stansted over a ‘potential threat on board’.

The aircraft was accompanied by RAF fighter jets.

No threat was found.
