British tourist died after drinking challenge

A British tourist died after a drinking challenge at a Jamaica hotel.

Timothy Southern, from Lichfield, Staffs, took on the challenge of drinking all 21 cocktails on the menu at the hotel pool bar.

He drank 12 of the 21 cocktails before going back to his room.

He  later  collapsed and was taken to hospital.

It happened last year at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in St Ann.

A medical examiner attributed his death to ‘acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption.’

The 53-year old had reportedly already been drinking before the cocktail challenge.

The family criticised the initial response from emergency services.

The details came to light during a coroner’s inquest in Staffordshire.

Coroner Emma Serrano determined the death was caused by alcohol.

The Southern family crowdfunded nearly £10,000 to bring his body back to the UK.
