The Balearic Islands are hiking the existing ‘eco tax’ on overnight stays for peak summer months.
In a ‘tourism containment’ measure, the low end rate increases from €1 to €2.5 per night.
The upper rate goes up from €4 to €6 per night and the tax for cruise ship passengers rises from €2 to €6 per night.
At the same time, the tax will be scrapped for the low season months of January and February.
There will also be a tax on vehicles registered outside the Balearic Islands.
This covers both private cars and rentals.
This could be as high as €85 depending on length of the stay and emissions.
It won’t affect Balearic Island based rental companies.
